Terrestrial and Atmospheric Systems

Our faculty and students study Terrestrial and Atmospheric Systems from a variety of perspectives. Within our program, research includes the quantification and characterization of a variety of contaminants in the atmosphere, biota, and other environmental milieu. Knowledge of the distribution among the different physical and chemical forms of an element is essential for predicting the element's mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity and for assessing their environmental impacts. Research in our program couples analytical chemistry with biogeochemistry, allowing us to model the fate of a variety of elements including toxic elements such as mercury, and non-toxic elements such as nitrogen. Research also includes ecotoxicology. Researchers in our program are studying the impacts of contaminants on soil biota, including plants, animals, and microbes. We are using a variety of techniques including whole organism physiological (growth, reproduction, respiration) and behavioral (avoidance) responses to assess impacts of toxicants. We are also using molecular approaches to assess microbial community structure and function of microbes in soils, biofilms, and other complex environmental samples.
