Surfaces, Materials, and Interfaces

This research node encapsulates a number of seemingly disparate interests, but they all share the interest in interfaces and surfaces and their materials. Construction of self-assembled mono-layers for use as antimicrobial coatings on a variety of surfaces, including plastic, metals, and organic fibers are designed to be permanent coatings on surfaces to dissuade the buildup of microbial colonies. The design of polymer encapsulated ceramic materials for applications in lighter weight security vests and materials for self-healing concretes are under investigation. Research in this area includes the interface and surface of cell membranes and how they control and provide a scaffold for numerous cell functions.
